Through the development and commercialisation of the da Vinci® Surgical System, Intuitive Surgical is taking surgery beyond the limits of the human hand™. Intuitive has created technology that enables surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery (MIS) through tiny ports ("keyholes") with the flexibility of traditional open surgery. This may aid in reducing surgical trauma, postoperative pain and surgical complications on adjacent tissue structures.

The da Vinci® Surgical System is the first and only totally "intuitive" laparoscopic surgical robot in existence. It was the first operative surgical robotic system in the world to have been cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA has cleared the System for use in many surgical procedures which include general laparoscopic surgery, thoracoscopic (chest) surgery, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, gynaecological surgery and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures.

The da Vinci® System is presently in clinical trials in the United States for other applications within cardiac surgery which include CABG (coronary artery by-pass graft) surgery. Already more than 210 da Vinci Systems are in use in major hospitals around the world.
